{AN: While this is primarily to see if I'm competent enough to RP here, I also want to see if my made-up character, Kinryou, can be used...I'm not entirely sure if she's acceptable, since it sounds like there's already too many dragons. ^^; Oh yeah, and her being a Kokuryuu (though her abilities vary from Hiei's) could pose some problems. Ah yes, I forgot to mention that this is an excerpt from a crappily-done, mega-crossover fanfic of mine. It's from the fourth chapter, so that's why I doesn't make any sense.}
A couple of gasps came from the fight’s audience. Upon seeing Akio’s face, Hiei himself took a step backwards, his eyes wide with surprise and perhaps a bit of fear. His own face was staring back at him.
“Who the hell are you?” he demanded.
Akio smiled and then morphed into a red-haired woman whose face was partially hidden. He tore the sword out of his victim’s torso. “I can be whoever you want me to be. You wouldn’t attack this face, would you?”
No answer. Hiei sank to the ground, gasping for air and coughing up more blood. Kinryou’s usually emotionless expression was instead that of concern, while Amelia’s bright, blue eyes were filled with terror.
‘Hiei seems so strong! How could he be hurt so easily?’ wondered Amelia.
“D-damn…” cursed Hiei as he shakily stood up.
A firm grip on his left wrist quickly pulled him to his feet. Kinryou stood before him and without giving him a chance to react she dashed off, still dragging him with her.
Hiei scowled and stared her down as best he could while they were running. “What…the hell are you doing?!”
Kinryou didn’t answer. Instead, she pulled out a soul and fused with her dark substance. A dark shadow in the shape of a griffin materialized before them. She first hoisted him on it, then climbed on herself. Hiei glared at her with angry crimson eyes. He knew what she was about to do…
“Go!” she shouted. Her griffin soul responded instantly and sprinted off in the opposite direction of Akio. Cocoa did the same, but first, he dropped a meteor in Akio’s direction.
“Feel power of Justice!” cried Amelia, despite her fear. She had mounted Cocoa and was bolting in the same direction as Hiei.
The group faintly saw the exit to the woods. Akio was hot on their trail, unfazed by Cocoa’s assault. Hiei was first to notice this. He grabbed for Tasogare, but the only thing that his hand grasped was thin air.
“Kinryou, where’s Tasogare?” he demanded.
The Kokuryu shrugged. “Don’t you have it…?”
“Damn!” he growled. Ignoring his wounds, he slipped off the griffin spirit.
“Don’t go looking for it! I’ll find it,” declared Amelia. “Run away while you still can!” Without another word, she jumped off of Cocoa.
“Wark!” squawked the chocobo.
Amelia ran head-on towards Akio, expecting an attack. However, the shape shifter simply continued on without bothering to acknowledge her presence. She stopped for a moment, baffled. “What…Aren’t you after me also?”
“Only Hiei,” explained Kinryou, who was not far behind her.
Amelia’s eyes widened. “Kinryou? What are you doing here? What about Hiei-san?”
“Cocoa and my servant…” was all that she said.
“We have to divert Akio’s attention from Hiei-san!” whispered Amelia to Kinryou. Before she received a response from her companion, the princess turned to face Akio, new determination within her. “You who are sworn to evil, hear me now; we are Hiei-san’s friends!”
“If that’s so, then I’d like to see the look on Hiei’s face when I show him your corpses,” Akio exclaimed sadistically. With a smirk he pursued the two girls. ‘I will eventually kill you, dear Hiei, but that day isn’t today…’
Kinryou sweatdropped, despite her nonchalant expression. ‘She just had to direct attention towards--’ a blast of energy to the back caused her thoughts to be washed over by pain. The Kokuryu collapsed on the spot.
Meanwhile, Amelia was ahead. She had returned to the clearing that was now stained with blood. Tasogare lay in the center. Hastily she grabbed it and turned to inform Kinryou of her find…only to see the dark dragon sprawled out on the ground. Amelia rushed towards Kinryou.
“Kinryou-san! This isn’t the time…We have to get out of here!”
Kinryou’s response was a disoriented murmur. She said nothing coherent.
‘The blast must have stunned her,’ concluded Amelia.
“I’ll take this,” grunted a voice beside them.
A bloodstained man in black kneeled next to them. Amelia smiled warmly, knowing now that Hiei was less heartless than he wanted them to believe…Until what he snatched was Tasogare from Amelia’s hands.
“Come on, Kinryou,” said Amelia in an abnormally calm voice as she helped the disoriented dragon to her feet.
Surprisingly, Hiei mounted the griffin shade without being told to do so. Fresh blood was still spilling out of his wound, though it was harder to tell while he wore black. His vision was fading, as was his strength. While the white magic user hoisted Kinryou behind him, she took note of that.
‘I’ll have to use healing magic on him when we get out of here,’ thought Amelia while riding Cocoa.
Much to the dismay of his companions, a certain small fire youkai turned in the opposite direction of the exit, towards Akio. Without giving them a chance to stop him, he bolted off on the griffin-soul with a dazed Kinryou seated behind him.
Akio smirked as Hiei came into sight. “Well, for the sake of spiting you…” he called out. As soon as the demon reached him, he disappeared.
Red eyes glowed angrily. “Damn you, Akio…”
However, the Forbidden Child’s anger was short-lived this time for a sudden force beneath him caused him to nearly hit the ground. The supposedly soulless griffin let out an irritated screech and made another attempt to throw him off of its back.
Amelia glanced over at Hiei, who was struggling with the griffin. The undead creature only obeyed Kinryou, who was semi-conscious at the moment. Her body was the only thing that kept it from bucking its rider off of its back. However, Hiei didn’t need the animal to buck him in order for him to fall off of it. Vision blurring, the small demon squinted to see what was up ahead. Cocoa noticed this and squawked at Amelia.
“Hiei-san!” she exclaimed as the youkai tumbled off of the griffin.
Hiei grimaced as he landed painfully on the ground. The griffin shrieked at him. Perhaps it was that which made Kinryou awaken. She disengaged the soul, which caused her to also fall uncomfortably to the ground. Soon after, both lost consciousness.
